Capes Radio Club For Amateurs
This follows a meeting held on the hobby by keen local amateur radio operators Phil Bussanich (VK6SO) and Shaun Palmer (VK6FSAP) at the Busselton Senior Citizen Centre, to see if there was enough interest to establish a club.
The Mail previously wrote about Mr Bussanich and his interest in amateur radio operation from his home, from where he ‘CQ-ed’ or reached out to people all around the world.
One minute he would be talking to a person in South Africa while the next he would be speaking to someone in Iceland.
Mr Bussanich said the meeting attracted the interest of eight people including five licensed amateur radio operators (ARO), two people interested in getting a foundation license and one visitor.
He was also contacted by three other local AROs who were unable to attend the meeting. One was elderly and house-bound due to illness, but supported the concept of the club.
He said the club’s inaugural meeting would be held on November 26, where office bearers would be elected and the club formally launched, and once it was “up and running more people might want to come along”.
The aim of the “Capes Amateur Radio Club”, as it will be called, will be to “foster and provide a platform for local amateur radio operators, attract new members to the hobby and provide communication-experienced operator assistance to various groups such as the Bush Fire Brigade, Marine Coastal Watch Services, Girl Guide and scouts”.
It will also “provide and maintain amateur communications equipment within the region, and have a plan for amateur emergency communication in the event of civil disaster”.
