Marco CAP, ham radio club offer amateur radio license technician course

The Marco Island Civil Air Patrol, in cooperation with the K5MI Marco Island Ham Club, will conduct a FCC amateur radio license technician course in 3 sessions, free of tuition and open to the public.

All three sessions will be held at the Marco Island CAP hangar located at the Marco Island Airport at the end of Main Sail Drive, off Collier Boulevard, south of U.S. 41 East.

Technician is the first level of training. No prerequisite is required.

The first Class session starts Saturday, Nov. 8, at 8 a.m. through noon. The second session is Nov. 15 from 8 a.m. through noon. The third session and FCC test is Nov. 22 from 8 a.m. through noon.

The course is given at no cost by Marco Island Civil Air Patrol. The study guide for Technician Class is $23.00 and can be purchased at check-in on Nov. 8. The FCC testing fees are $14.00.

Applicants can be of any age, but must have a federal-accepted identification and Social Security number to qualify for the testing session and licensing.

All training will include hands-on operation of VHF amateur radio equipment and actual radio contact with other seasoned “hams” (licensed amateur radio operators). The present FCC regulations no longer require Morse Code proficiency.

Enrollment will be limited to a first-come-first-served basis. If over-subscribed, a waiting list will be maintained. Plans are to offer the General Class license course and testing in late January
