Before you Begin... by VU2LRL (OM VenuGopal)

As part of the original design team I am glad to share some tips from my personal design experience and usage of ATS -1 (20m SSB) transceiver. My task in this project was to design the coils, bandpass filters, and the conversion of the conventional gang capacitor tuned VFO to varactor tuned VFO.

I would share my tips over a period of time on this website and I do hope you would find this information useful. Also I may add that if you have constructed ATS-1 and have a tip to share, or some advice to those who are going to homebrew this circuit this year, please do respond back to me, or post your feedback in the forum and spread the knowledge.

Under the guidance of the team leader VU2IF. (Dr. Ashutosh Singh) The amplifier section right from the stage of 2n2222 to the final amplifier was done and optimized by VU2RTV (Om Venkataramanan) and the full modified version of ATS -1 was assembled and put on working by him . Some modifications were done in the original design after the publication of the article in SPARK Magazine after receiving the inputs from various hams.

Tip 1
Before attempting the project one should have or have the access of the following test equipments,

  1. RF milli-voltmeter (AKA RF Probe or RF Detector)
  2. GDO (Grid Dip Oscillator)
  3. Oscilloscope (If you can)
  4. Signal Generator

If you already have all of the above, you are well set to start construction, but wait, what about Power Supply? I shall cover my tip on power supply in next post! Also if you do not have any of the above and are looking for some decent circuits - drop in a line and we shall share the circuit diagram for homebrewing them (not the oscilloscope of course, but the rest- you can homebrew at home!)
