What Are Hamfests?
A Hamfest is a convention of amateur radio enthusiasts where they swap information and gear.

Hamfests are events organized by amateur radio enthusiasts, for social gathering and comparison and sales of radio equipment. Most hamfests feature a flea market, where the attendees buy and sell equipment, generally from and for their personal stations. Some of the larger hamfests have another section, separate from the flea market, where vendors and manufacturers of new equipment demonstrate and sell their products at trade show-like booths. Some hamfests offer seminars on technical, operational, and legal aspects of amateur radio. Hamfests are usually annual or semiannual events lasting from several hours to several days, usually over a weekend, with longer meetings generally including license examination sessions.

Clubs, amateur radio resellers, manufacturers, and individuals may rent space from the sponsoring organization to show and sell their equipment. The equipment offered at the sales section of a hamfest can vary significantly from the newest high-tech gear to used, refurbished, or even antique equipment, and haggling or bargaining is the most common means of sale. Equipment that originally sold at great expense to commercial users (such as public safety agencies) can often be found at a fraction of the price, just a few years later. Likewise, accessories which are no longer available from their manufacturers may be found, and many sales of complete systems are made to buyers who only need one or two components. Junk boxes abound, filled with often-unidentifiable parts, which are frequently left over from projects or equipment long-since gone.

The Dayton, Ohio Hamvention, the International DX Convention, the HAM RADIO event in Friedrichschafen, Germany, and the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club Field Day near Sydney in Australia are events where manufacturers most commonly introduce new products to the amateur radio marketplace.

Newsflash

The Pakistan Amateur Radio Society (PARS) in association with Islamabad Jeep Club (IJC) and Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) has started relief activities by providing food, tents and medical support to the northern flood effected areas of Nowshera, Charsadda and central Sargodha districts.

The Cellular services are down and so is the landline. (Why Ham Radio in Disaster Management)Last week, the joint team carried out survey in the north and the centre of the country and to its dismay the situation isn’t promising. Restoration of cellular services and Landlines could take months.

In order to address the communication breakage PARS in collaboration with Islamabad Jeep Club has constituted two teams. One would cater for the northern cities linking Islamabad with Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda. The other would link cities in the centre and would include, Sargodha, Lahore and Faisalabad and Multan.

PARS already has a 2-meter repeater in place and a weak signal whereof can be heard in these areas, but would need cross band repeaters to further increase its strength and allow penetration into the remote areas. This would result in effective communication through handhelds rather than reliance on base stations where there is an issue with electricity.

We would therefore request International and National Ham Community to provide us the following equipment, if possible.

   1. Cross band repeater radios (any brand)
       x 3  (144-430 MHz)
   2. Coaxial Cable 100 ft x3 with connectors
   3. Power supplies x 3
   4. Hi gain dual band antennas x 3
   5. Handhelds (any brand vhf 2meter) x 5

The equipment could be new or used but should in workable condition.

Please email directly ap2nk or ap2mks for further clarification and information.
