Ham Radio activity from Haiti heard

Some ham radio activity from Haiti is beginning to be heard, following yesterday's devastating earthquake.

Father John Henault, HH6JH, in Port-au-Prince, made contact late Wednesday morning with the Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net (IATN) on 14.300 MHz, the IARU Global Centre of Activity frequency for emergency communications.

Thailand's radio hams help save almost 1,000 lives

Ham Radio in Disaster Management proves its worth once again in Thailand Floods.

At a recent gathering hosted by Thailand's amateur radio society, RAST, those present heard how RAST Secretary Wacharaphol, HS4DDQ, and his team working with the Public Health Ministry on Ngarmwongwarn Road and using the callsign HS0AC had helped to save almost 1,000 lives by coordinating rescue communications in cases of medical emergencies.

The activities of the amateur radio station established by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission using the call HS0AB were also discussed, along with the donations that RAST has received from several members and that now total over 50,000 baht, including a large amount received from donors in Malaysia.

Delhi Hams Mock Drill for Disaster Management

Sunday Dec 20th 2009 witnessed a Simplex VHF Activity for disaster management in Delhi and NCR Region. It all started with the proposal by VU2OEC OM Rajesh Chandwani (Regional Coordinator - ARSI) to do a mock drill in case repeater stops to function in NCR and how hams can effectively communicate with each other during any real event in the simplex mode.

Orissa Govt gears up to weather calamities

Bhubaneswar: While people of all hues paid tributes to the victims of the devastating super cyclone on Thursday, the state government was busy putting in place hi-fi mechanisms to combat the recurrence of such high-voltage natural disasters in future.
On the occasion of 10th anniversary of the 1999 super cyclone, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated HAM (amateur) radio station and stressed on the use of technology to help reduce damages caused by natural calamities.
