Hello to all, my name is Mike O’Rourke. I am 63 years old, retired, and living in Vero Beach, Florida, USA.

I have been a Ham Radio Operator since 1959. I finally got a Collins KWM-2 this year. It only took me 50 years to afford it!

I worked at the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan from 1971 to 1999, and then transferred to Delphi Harrison Division in Lockport, New York where I retired in 2002. My title was Staff Research Technician. I was hired originally for the “microwave project” to use radar to set off air bags. When the lawyers shut that down we worked on radar brakes and they shut that down too. I then went to the control systems group to work on engine control systems. And finally to the sensors group developing the sensors for engine control. When the GM, Delphi split occurred I was able to transfer to the State I grew up in, New York, albeit on the other side of it. This was the old Harrison Division where they made radiators. Heat was controlled in cars by bowden cables in the old days and they only had a small electronics group to work on controls and sensors, so it was a good fit. I had worked in the industry for 28 years and only saw the inside of a plant twice! It was good to see how our work was used in the field.

I heard about this site and the ATS 1 in the June issue of QST. I was very intrigued by the transceiver. It looks to be a very well thought out and executed design. Besides, I worked for many Indian engineers at the Labs in my carrier and all were top notch.

I contacted Rajani VU3CAV about obtaining a kit and it arrived today just eight days after he mailed it! Now that is service!

I look forward to posts from others and their ATS 1. I especially like the pic by VU2ASB of his rig in Plexiglas. I may copy that.

Welcome to ATS-1 Club Mike. I made my first one about 6 years back and this one is my second attempt... and we hope you would enjoy making and then operating the rig.

We look forward to your inputs on progress, and hope to learn a few things from you too !!!
